Privately founded by Seiji Tsutsumi, a major business magnate who from middle age has also managed to pursue a successful career as a writer and poet, The Saison Foundation offers long-term, broad-based support to contemporary Japanese theatre and dance.
As one of the Foundation's goals is to foster international exchange it also runs a Visiting Fellows Programme which supports 'research visits to Japan for those who are expected to play an important role in the international performing arts scene'.
The programme is open to both artists and arts administrators who wish to make a visit of between 35 and 50 days with the main purpose of researching arts and culture in Japan. Awardees are also able to use the facilities at Morishita Studio, the Foundation's Tokyo space, 'for rehearsals, workshops, work-in-progress showings or performance'. There is a cost for use of the space, but this can be entered into the application, which can cover travel, living expenses, accommodation, and the cost of research activities.
