To tie in with the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Cultural Programme, Bright Night International are coordinating the development of a new sixteen-strong contemporary circus company, the Commonwealth Youth Circus, and are currently looking for young circus artists / dancers / traceurs / gymnasts / physical performers to join its nine-month training programme.
The successful applicants will be expected to give 20-25 hours a week, and in return will get personal tuition, technical and performance skills training, a scheduled fitness programme, and the chance to work with directors, choreographers and designers. Towards the end of the process the Youth Circus will 'work with a professional creative team to make high-level performances' to be staged in summer 2014 as part of the Queen's Baton Relay and the Commonwealth Games celebrations.
Applicants should be 15-25 years old, and while a background in circus, dance, tricking, physical theatre, acrobatics, gymnastics or parkour is desirable, Bright Night will select participants 'based on potential as well as experience', and are looking for 'creativity, stage presence, interaction with others, ability to take direction and commitment to training' as well as a good base level of strength, flexibility and stamina.
The training programme will be based in central Glasgow and mostly take place on evenings and weekends. It will be split into three phases: Term 1 (21 October - 21 December 2013), Term 2 (January-March 2014), and Rehearsals (April-June 2014). Performances will be in Scotland on seven days between 20 June - 23 July 2014.
