    Context & notes

On 1 July 2013, Arts Council England shifted over to a new organisational structure in order to reduce its administrative costs by 50% (part of a 2010 settlement with central government which required ACE to manage a cut to its grant in aid budget of 29.6% in real terms before 2014-15). The new structure has brought a reduction in ACE's staff and seen its nine operational regions consolidated into just five. The statistics above straddle the administrative change. In order to present the entire year and to compare it to 2012-13, awards to the old regions have been transferred to their newer equivalents. So East of England and South East have been counted as South East; East Midlands and West Midlands have been counted as Midlands; and North East, North West, and Yorkshire and Humber have been counted as North.

Grants for the Arts funding to circus increased significantly in 2013-14, rising around 65%, but the total amount available through the GftA programme also rose from £56 million to £70 million (25%). In 2012-13 circus projects accounted for 1.36% of all GftA subvention; in 2013-14 they made up 1.79%.

Compared to 2012-13 the total number of awards to circus projects has risen slightly, as has the average grant size. The latter has been pushed up this year by two very large grant awards, but was also likely affected by ACE's decision to raise the upper limit for 'small' grants from £10,000 to £15,000.

    Other major ACE funding

    National Portfolio Organisations

National Portfolio Organisations are those receiving regular, annual funding over the period 2012-15. In 2013-14 Arts Council England paid out a total £337 million to the portfolio.

    Organisation Region Artform Subvention 2013-14
Albert & Friends Instant Circus London Theatre £89,955
    Circus Space London Theatre £347,715
    Circomedia South West Theatre £108,375
Crying Out Loud London Combined arts £214,830
Greentop Community Circus Centre Yorkshire Theatre £71,680
    Mimbre London Theatre £127,924
NoFit State Circus West Midlands Theatre £204,600
    Ockham's Razor London Theatre £184,140
    Upswing London Theatre £117,645

    * There are also a number of NPO venues/festivals which aren't included here but which have significant circus programmes. For more see here. The total funding to the above organisations represents 0.4% of NPO subvention in 2013-14.

Note that because there's no category for circus within Arts Council England's funding system the above data is partly interpretative. Awards are included if the applicant was a circus company / organisation or if the funded activity was focused primarily on the sector. The data covers the period 1 April 2013 - 31 March 2014.

The regions shown on the map approximately correspond to the administrative regions of Arts Council England. The shapefiles were created by merging certain English Government Office Network Regions [shapefile]. Choropleth scheme generated by Color Brewer.
