Following the usual festival-long assessing/shortlisting/judging procedure, Total Theatre have announced the seven recipients of their 2013 Awards.
Three of them go to circus companies:
Pirates of the Carabina receive a Physical and Visual Award for Flown.
Compagnie Non Nova also receive a Physical and Visual Award, theirs for L'Apres-midi d'un Foehn.
Finally, Circa have been recognised with a Significant Contribution Award, an accolade given, in the last three years, to Joseph Seelig and Helen Lannaghan, directors of the London International Mime Festival, Judith Knight, director of Arts Admin, and David Bates, impressario of The Famous Speigeltent.
Also shortlisted in the physical/visual category were NoFit State Circus with Bianco, Circa with Wunderkammer, Compagnie Bal / Jeanne Mordoj with La Poème, 3 is a Crowd with Fright or Flight, Gandini Juggling with Smashed, and Stefan Sing & Cristiana Casadio with Tangram.
The Total Theatre Awards are given each year at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and recognise the artists and companies 'leading innovative work within the fields of devised theatre, live art, visual performance, mime, puppetry, physical theatre, experimental theatre, clown, circus, street, immersive, outdoor, site specific performance and more'.
